Answer: C - The answer “appropriate for terrain” is not one of the four AASHTO requirements for vertical curves. The four requirements that AASHTO lists for vertical curves are as follows:

• Safe - ample sight distances are provided
• Comfortable to navigate - gravitational and vertical centripetal forces are managed
• Pleasing in appearance - long vertical curves rather than short vertical curves
• Adequate for drainage - 0.5% minimum grades in areas receiving snow and 0.3% in other areas
