A road bike or outdoor bike will provide entirely different riding positions to a spin bike, and will provide a different level and type of resistance. Spin bikes have a fixed wheel (i.e. no freewheel) providing a heavier and smoother load than a regular bicycle on a trainer and requires constant pedaling from the participant. In addition, turbo trainers can be noisy and, therefore, awkward for a spin class instructor.
