While there are national liquor laws, each state has its own additional (often stricter) rules and regulations concerning the sale and consumption of alcohol. Local liquor authorities enforce these laws and issue citations to establishments that violate them. These agencies can also approve liquor licenses and monitor those who hold them. When appropriate, the liquor authority will also hold hearings for violations.
