CLEP US Government

Category - Federalism

Why was the Civil Rights Movement important to the development of federalism in the United States?
  1. The states retained the power over whether to enforce federal decisions.
  2. The movement was so popular that it brought the nation closer together than it ever had been before.
  3. The federal government had to force the states to abide by the new laws and court rulings that came out of the movement.
  4. Through the changes brought about, the municipalities (cities and towns) gained as much power as did the states.
  5. It led to the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was responsible for a massive expansion in the federal government.
Explanation
Answer: C- Many Southern states refused to obey the new laws and court rulings, so the federal government had to intercede. On a few occasions, the federal government assigned National Guard troops to ensure that states followed the new guidelines, for example by escorting African American children to school during desegregation.
