Answer: C - In The Second Treatise of Civil Government, John Locke wrote the statement above, concerning man’s necessity for law “to preserve and enlarge freedom.” Locke wrote the treatise after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He was a British Enlightenment thinker whose writing had a direct and unmistakable influence on the Founding Fathers nearly a century later. After witnessing some of the upheaval in England that followed the creation of the Anglican Church, followed by several generations of conflict between Anglican and Catholic monarchs, Locke steadfastly argued for the separation of church and state, which became a cornerstone of U.S. civil law.
