It commonly occurs at night in response to an excess of circulating insulin, which works to decrease blood glucose levels. The resulting hypoglycemia triggers release of epinephrine to raise blood glucose levels, leading to hyperglycemia. The most effective treatment is to adjust the evening insulin dose and to add protein to the bedtime snack.
