People could become slaves as prisoners of war or in repayment of a debt, and their children were not necessarily be slaves just because they were born while the parents were slaves. Thus, slavery was a condition that individuals could move in and out of for a variety of reasons. American slavery made it a permanent status that was conferred upon children.
