The idea behind the Zone of Proximal Development, a theory developed by Lev Vygotsky, is that students learn from a variety of sources. Their teachers are a primary source, but also learning from older students or students who have mastered a topic are highly effective learning tools. It also benefits the students who have an opportunity to show what they have mastered as they will solidify their understanding of the topic.
