Answer: C - The conflict in Vietnam began during World War II when the country was still French Indochina, which became the State of Vietnam in 1949. After a period back under French control, the 1954 Geneva Accord ended colonial rule for good. Vietnam was divided into two states: communist North Vietnam and republican South Vietnam. The United States became the primary supporter of South Vietnam when the French left the region. The following year (1955), the Vietnam War started between the North and South, while the United States officially acted as an advisor to South Vietnam. However, the United States became fully immersed in the war by 1964 and didn’t withdraw until 1973. The war formally ended in 1975 when North Vietnam gained control of South Vietnam and the two countries re-unified.
