Doula

Category - Psychology & Philosophy

In order to help mothers have the births they want, it is necessary for the doula to enlist the support and trust of the entire healthcare team. Ways to do this include all of the following EXCEPT:
  1. Keep all your thoughts about the staff to yourself, and only share them with your colleagues.
  2. Help the staff understand their importance in the mother's memory of this birth.
  3. Recognize you are all part of the same team helping the mother achieve the birth she wants.
  4. Help the staff see the benefits of natural birth, and the challenge and excitement of working with these mothers.
Explanation
Answer: A - Showing signs that you appreciate the staff - even simple words of thanks or appreciation - go a long way towards forging mutually supportive relationships with the maternity care staff. Get to know staff members, and make it known that you are glad they're caring for your client. When the healthcare staff is aware of their significance to the mother, they will do their best to help her have the birth memory she seeks. Creating an environment of teamwork rather than one of rivalry will empower caregivers to support the mother's birth goals. Natural birth can be so much more rewarding than simply caring for a medicated mother, and the more natural births the caregivers see, the better they will understand this distinction.
