You are a network administrator on your network. A single Ethernet 10/100 Mbps switch on this network is handling all data transfers on a server network configured with 10/100 NIC cards. Many users are complaining about slow connections. Which of the following should be done to improve network performance?
  1. Upgrade the switch to a 1 Gbps switch.
  2. Reduce the number of PCs using this network connection.
  3. Install more switches on the network.
  4. Install a load balancer on the network.
Explanation
Answer - A - To improve the performance of the network, upgrade the switch to a 1 Gbps switch.

Key Takeaway: Gigabit Ethernet is used for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of a gigabit per second, as defined by the IEEE 802.3-2008 standard. Gigabit switch will significantly improve network throughput. The benefits of Gigabit Ethernet include increased bandwidth for higher performance, elimination of bottlenecks, and improved Quality of Service (QoS) features, which can be used to help eliminate jittery video or distorted audio in VIOP applications.

Additional Answers

robert mcconaghie says:

Disagree with this, if the clients are using 10/100 cards then installing a 1Gbps capable switch will not significantly improve throughput. It may slightly improve performance because it has a higher switching and packet handling capacity but not to any significant extent. If, however, the clients are using 10/100/1000 cards then the answer is true. So either the question text is wrong, or the answer is.
