More complex devices like telescopes soon followed. Vertical windmills were developed in France and England in the late 12th century. Inventors in both the Near East and Europe developed the astrolabe and an armillary sphere in the Middle Ages. And, medieval agricultural innovations included horseshoes, heavy plows, wheelbarrows and horse collars.
