Because of the economic competition, countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, and Great Britain expanded out of their borders in order to open up new markets in the New World. The Spanish Empire of Latin America has greatly increased the nation’s wealth and placed importance on their Navy strength. Mercantilism has created super powers of the sea and was a precursor to capitalism.
