Uterine rupture is a catastrophic event whereby the myometrial wall is breached; it can be life - threatening for both mother and baby. Oxytocin is used to stimulate contractions to induce labor. However, it needs to be carefully administered to prevent over - stimulation of contractions. Agents that stimulate contractions of the myometrium are frequently termed ‘oxytocics’. Uterine rupture, uterine hyperstimulation, water intoxication, and hypotension are maternal complications during labor; fetal distress and hypoxia are fetal complications during labor.
