In the vertex position, the desciptive term used to express that the occiput is posteriorly placed over the sacroiliac joint (or directly over the sacrum)is occipito-posterior position. The usual position of the vertex position in delivery is the flexed occipito-anterior position; the occipito-posterior position is a malposition of the vertex rather than an abnormal presentation (i.e., breech or compound).
