While every labor is different, the parameters marking the first stage of labor are the dilation and effacement of the cervix. The time it takes depends on many factors, but for all women labor gets more intense over a number of hours (typically 12 hours for a first time mother, fewer for a mother who has given birth before). First stage can further be divided into early, active, and transitional, each with their own physical markers.
