Answer: D - The Bolsheviks initially had great difficulty effectively handling the food shortages that plagued the country. Their solution was to take food from the large farmers and redistribute it in deprived rural areas and cities. This immediately alienated the farmers, who feared their farms were being nationalized. In addition, the lack of food turned many of the peasants and city dwellers against the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks had come to power on the promise to end World War I, which they did successfully, albeit on unfavorable terms.
