Answer: D - According to the foundation myth of Rome, the city was founded by Romulus in 753 BCE after he defeated his brother Remus in battle. The brothers were supposedly fathered by the Roman god Mars (known in Greek culture as Ares, the god of war) or Hercules (known in Greek culture as Heracles). As adults, the brothers fought over where to begin a city, and Romulus ultimately prevailed. Most modern historians believe that Romulus and Remus were real people, but the other aspects of their story are questionable (and their parentage certainly myth). Romulus ruled Rome as a kingdom from 753 to 715 BCE.
