Category - Role of the Aide
Your patient is a quadriplegic. You notice he is developing decubiti on his buttocks. His wheelchair has a standard sling seat, so he can fold the chair and put it in the trunk of his car when traveling. What device do you recommend to him to help prevent him from developing additional decubiti?
Answer: A. You could recommend a gel cushion for your patient's current wheelchair. If he likes the convenience of having a folding wheelchair, he will probably not be accepting a new wheelchair. He could, however, use a gel cushion in the seat of his current wheelchair to even out the pressure against his skin and prevent additional decubiti from forming. You can always consult with a doctor or nurse if you are unsure, but it makes sense to point out this discomfort.
