You are an Advanced EMT on a call with four EMTs and a Paramedic; which of you cannot give an IV?
Answer: A - EMTs cannot give an IV. Intravenous access is a skill taught to Advanced EMTs and not EMTs. Under the 1994 U.S. Department of Transportation curriculum EMTs can, however, assist with the administration of epinephrine for anaphylaxis. The administration of oxygen and insertion of a nasopharyngeal airway have also been standard practices for EMTs for several years.
