In many ways, the Spanish Civil War foreshadowed World War II, pitting the liberal left against a fascist regime. Due to the high price paid during World War I, the United States, France, and England proclaimed neutrality in the hopes of avoiding a large-scale European war. The USSR, however, did send supplies and other reinforcements to fight Franco. In addition, tens of thousands of volunteers from all over the world came to fight in the Spanish Civil War, indicating the power ideological conflicts would generate in the 20th century.
