Answer: C - The steam engine was originally developed for the mining industry. Although its application would change all of the industries listed, its original function was pumping water out of coalmines in Northern England and Scotland. Thomas Newcomen developed the first engine for this purpose in 1702, although James Watt improved it in 1763, making it much more efficient, which led to applications in other industries.
