Answer: B - The “Redeemers” were a faction of Southern Democrats who were active during and following the Reconstruction Era. They were regressive and aspired to “redeem” the South by forcing carpetbaggers, scalawags, and freedmen out of power so that they could reinstate as many segregationist policies as they could in order to “preserve” the region’s “nobility.” For the most part, they were successful, and their militant policies ultimately became the Jim Crow laws that defined life in the South until the 1950s.
