Notorious for breaking into factories and destroying them in their attempts to thwart progress, the Luddites had lost the most in the shift from craftsmanship to industrial production. Skilled workers found themselves obsolete and became unable to support their families, leaving them no choice but to join the ranks of the unskilled factory workers at significantly lower wages. Thus, they challenged the idea that the Industrial Revolution represented progress.
