Answer: D - The Age of Exploration began when Henry the Navigator, a Portuguese prince, began exploring the Atlantic coast of Africa in 1418. Henry wanted to bypass the middlemen in North Africa by trading with West Africa directly. He also hoped to find mythical Christian lands on the continent (spreading Christianity became one of his leading goals). Henry funded a later Portuguese exploration and opened a school for navigation in Sarges. (Bartolomeu Dias followed Henry’s route to reach and sail around the southern tip of Africa in 1488. Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe in 1522. Both men were Portuguese, though Magellan was sponsored by Spain.)
