In obstructed labor, the fetus is at risk of asphyxia, acidosis, and infection. Deprivation of oxygen (asphyxia) to the baby during birth can result in permanent brain damage or death. This can be caused by a very long or difficult delivery; problems with the placenta separating from the uterus too soon; too little oxygen in the mother’s blood before or during birth; and problems with the umbilical cord during delivery.
