Answer: D - India's movement to remove British rule began decades before independence in 1947, and arguably could be traded back to the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. However, it came about largely through the work of Indian attorney Mahatma Gandhi, who sought better relations between India's Muslim and Hindu populations as well as independence from Britain. Gandhi began his efforts in 1919, and by the 1930s his boycotts of British goods and other means of non-violent activism were significantly affecting the British, who relinquished control in 1947.
