Steinem had been a professional journalist since 1962 and was hired by the newly formed New York magazine in 1968. By the following year, she was actively engaged at the forefront of the women’s liberation and reproductive rights movements. Ms. began as a special edition of New York magazine but quickly became a publication in its own right.
