Answer: A - The Haitian Rebellion (1791-1804) effectively ended French colonialism in the New World. Inspired by the American and French revolutions, the population of Haiti revolted against France. Toussaint L'Ouverture was the most famous Haitian leader, although he would not live to see Haitian independence. Haiti banned slavery, which Napoleon intended to reinstitute. Napoleon’s inability to recapture the colony convinced him to sell the Louisiana Territory, which he had recently acquired from Spain. The loss of Haiti caused him to abandon his plans for American expansion of his empire. The sale of the Louisiana Territory was intended to fund his European wars. In this way, President Thomas Jefferson acquired land that would later become part or all of fifteen different states.
