It endured for nearly 1000 years after the end of the Western Empire. Over the centuries, the Byzantine Empire re conquered and lost various portions of the former Roman Empire, including most of the Mediterranean Coast. Culturally, Byzantium was influenced by Greek civilization more than Roman civilization.
