Under indentured servitude, masters would pay their servants’ passage and board in exchange for an established period of service. In the end, the servant was released and generally given land and tools. However, the institution was highly abusive and it became increasingly difficult to recruit Europeans. Thus, slavery entered the colonies in response to the demand for cheap labor and the lack of Europeans willing to fill this niche.
