Answer: B - During World War I, Japan was able to take advantage of the chaos in Europe and seize territory in China as well as the German islands in the Pacific. Manchuria and much of northern China became an exclusive protectorate under Japan, which had declared war on Germany in 1914. The defeat of Russia nearly a decade before, and the indifference of Europe to this conquest, set the stage for Japan becoming a dominant power in the 20th century.
