Which of the following is the best example of work being done on an object?

  1. holding a 50 kg barbell
  2. lifting a bag of groceries
  3. keeping a board in place
  4. pushing on a car that will not move
Explanation

Answer: B - lifting a bag of groceries

Work is force that transfers energy or movement between a system and its surroundings.  In this case the work is moving the grocery bag.

This isn't actually the greatest question ever written.  You could argue work is being done in examples A, Cand D.   Holding a barbell counters the force of gravity.  Answer C has an ambiguous wording.  In D the amount of work done isn't enough to overcome the weight of the car.
