Without the grass roots holding the soil together, the soil begins to spread, which only makes it more susceptible to drought. Conversely, too much rain, especially when heavy rain hits exposed soil, can cause soil to wash away, making it increasingly difficult for the land to maintain the vegetation necessary to fend off desertification. Vast swaths of China and Africa are experiencing desertification.
