Answer: C - Jane Addams was a pioneer of settlement house movement, and in 1931 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She was the first American woman to receive the honor. (She was the second woman to receive the award and the sixth American; her five American predecessors included two Presidents of the United States, two Secretaries of State, and a Vice President.) She is considered the most prominent reformer of the Progressive Era after Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson (who were two of the American Nobel Laureates before her). Her Hull House in Chicago housed new European immigrants, helping them get on their feet with employment and housing. She was president of the International Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and she dedicated her Nobel prize money to the organization.
