Chapter tests, benchmark assessments and driving tests are examples of summative assessments. Diagnostic evaluations are administers prior to instruction. Formative assessments are used during instruction in order to monitor student learning and adjust instructional strategies, as needed. Self-evaluations are one type of assessment that can fall into the categories of diagnostic, formative or summative.
