The party was comprised of a group of Federalists unhappy with the War of 1812, who met in Hartford, Conn. from 1814-1815. The convention participants discussed a variety of measures intended to shift power from the Southern states, including removing the Three-Fifths Compromise from the Constitution. But when Andrew Jackson won the Battle of New Orleans immediately after the end of the war, allowing Americans to believe that the otherwise fruitless war effort had been successful, the convention backfired.
