What is Green-e certified electricity?
  1. Electricity provided by the utility company that has rebates and incentives
  2. Electricity produced by renewable energy resources
  3. Electricity produced by combustion of fossil fuels
  4. Electricity produced by natural gas
Explanation
Answer - B - Green-e certified electricity is electricity produced by renewable energy source (i.e. sun, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low impact small hydroelectric sources) that customers can buy to avoid environmental impact and its greenhouse gas reduction benefits. Green-e certified electricity is a subset of renewable energy and represents renewable resources. Green-e is the name of the company that provides independent energy source certification and verification and is recognized as credible by the USGBC.

Ted Chan says:

According to Green-e, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) support renewable electricity production in the region of generation. A REC represents the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable electricity. For every unit of renewable electricity generated and put onto the electricity grid, an equivalent amount of RECs is produced. RECs purchased with Green-e certification verify exclusive use of the renewable electricity within an electricity market by the REC purchaser, when paired with electricity drawn from that electricity market. Additionally, REC purchase help to build a market for renewable electricity. Increased demand for, and generation of, renewable electricity helps reduce conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable electricity generator is located. It also has other local and global environmental benefits which may include emitting little or no regional air pollution or carbon dioxide.
