What does James Madison say about removing the causes of factions in Federalist #10?
  1. It is the only way to maintain order.
  2. Preventing factions would be worse than letting them form.
  3. A basic separation of powers framework is best suited to prevent factions.
  4. The best way to remove the cause of factions is to create an extended union.
  5. Factions were a good thing, so it would be wrong to remove the causes of them.
Explanation
Answer: B - As bad as Madison thought factions were, he thought removing them would be worse. In order to remove the cause of factions, you would have to take away liberty. In his mind, that would be like trying to cure someone of the common cold by killing the patient. The cure would be worse than the disease. It is better to treat the symptoms-in this case, make sure the factions don’t cause more harm than they need to, by spreading them out and forcing them to compete with each other.
