Germany was trying to entice Mexico into launching a border war with the United States, in hopes that would keep the then-isolationist superpower too occupied to affect the Allied effort in the European theater of WWI. However, Great Britain intercepted the transmission, decoded it, and revealed the contents of the message to the United States, causing the U.S. to immediately jump into the war in opposition to Germany, helping to end the global conflict.
