A period of détente began in 1971, during which relations between the two factions warmed. Four years later, the countries undertook their first joint space mission-the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project-marking an end to the Space Race. The election of Ronald Reagan caused an end to the détente, but the two parties began to make strides later in the decade to establish an enduring peace. Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev declared a policy of perestroika (“rebuilding”) in 1986, which was meant to reform the Soviet economic and political systems.
