The importance of early detection of cord prolapse includes prevention of fetal asphyxia (which can cause permanent disability or death) and prevention of membrane rupture in the pregnant woman in labor. Some factors precipitating cord prolapse are malpresentation, contracted pelvis, and polyhydramnios.
