The U.S. Supreme Court has original jurisdiction over suits between two or more states; suits involving ambassadors and public ministers; suits between the United States and a state; and suits by a state against citizens of another state (the latter three are concurrent with the U.S. District Court). The Court has appellate jurisdiction over appeals from circuit courts of appeal and state supreme courts (if the suit involves a matter of federal law).
