Progressive Party candidate Theodore Roosevelt-following his presidency, during which he was a Republican-adopted many of the Populist positions in the Progressive platform when he attempted to return to the White House in 1912. While Theodore Roosevelt was unsuccessful in 1912, when his fifth cousin Franklin Roosevelt was elected as a Democrat 20 years later, he adopted many Populist concepts in his New Deal.
