Licensed Chemical Addictions Counselor Study Questions

Category - Licensed Chemical Addictions Counselor Practice Test

The mother of three preschool children works and is a single parent. She has arrived at the emergency room asking for help. She has relapsed on heroine after being clean for two years. However she has a history of chemical multi-abuse. She will lose custody of her children if the state learns of her relapse. She is pregnant. What two options would be most appropriate for her?
  1. Outpatient Treatment.
  2. Intensive Outpatient Treatment.
  3. Inpatient Treatment.
  4. Chemical Substitution Program.
Explanation
Answer: A & C - Inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment would be the most effective for this employed mother with small children and a child protection case. Let her use the system. Inpatient is needed until the woman has withdrawn sufficiently from withdrawal cramps, possible relapse risks have subsided and her child is born. She could then be transferred into outpatient treatment.

This answer is misleading. As a counselor, you are assessing the situation that is presented, not a potential future outcome. In many states, there is mandatory reporting if a woman is pregnant and is using illicit drugs, especially if there is a CHiPS case already in progress.
