Answer: C - John Winthrop's vision was that of a City on the Hill. The metaphor referred not only to the fact that Puritans were closer to God, but also above everyone else because of their devotion. It was this idealism that led to much of Winthrop's intolerance since his vision of a unified community did not leave much room for diversity.
