Answer: C - Many maternal infections can lead to dehydration. Maternal dehydration will compromise the fluid and electrolyte balances of the mother and, as such, can affect the fetus and its development. It is a concern for the fetus even when the fetus itself is not infected with the same infectious disease as the mother. Women at risk for dehydration should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and Pedialyte. Intravenous fluids may be indicated when the dehydration is severe.
