Iliotibial band is a thick fibrous band which runs along the lateral aspect of the thigh and inserts at the gerdy tubercle on the anterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia.

When the knee flexes from full extension, the iliotibial band shifts on the lateral femoral condyle from an anterior position to posterior. This crossing from anterior to posterior occurs during the 30 degrees of knee flexion.
