There are between 70 and 120 questions on the Emergency Medicine exam divided into five categories: Airway, Respiration & Ventilation (18%-22%), Cardiology & Resuscitation (20%-24%), Trauma (14%-18%), Medical/Obstetrics/Gyn (27%-31%), and EMS Ops (10%-14%).

The EMT Cognitive exam is 2 hours long.

The passing score for the EMT Cognitive exam is dependent on each version of the exam. An algorithm determines the difficulty of the exam based on each test taker.

Passing the EMT Cognitive exam is necessary for the National Registry.
