The AC process encourages the proliferation of bacteria, the most notorious of which is Legionella, the bacteria behind Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia that kills roughly 10% of those who contract it. It is contracted through inhaling air or vapor infected with the bacteria. Unless the condensate is treated with biocides to kill the bacteria, its safe usefulness is limited.
